How to use Birth Plan

Write preferences as priorities you can take to your care team — flexible enough for a real labour day.

Pregnancy

When to use it

  • You are entering the third trimester and want preferences written down
  • You have an appointment to discuss birth options
  • You want a PDF to share with your partner or unit

Steps

  1. Open Birth Plan. In Care, open Birth Plan (typically available in the 3rd trimester when your due date is set).
  2. Fill sections that matter to you. Work through labour preferences, pain relief, who you want present, and postpartum wishes. Skip what does not apply — incomplete is fine.
  3. Phrase wishes as priorities. Prefer “I want the option of…” over rigid scripts. Plans that bend survive change better than plans that shatter.
  4. Export or review together. Generate a clinical-style PDF when you are ready to share with your partner or clinician. Revisit after tours or classes.

Tips

  • A birth plan is a conversation starter, not a contract with labour.
  • Update it after you learn what your hospital or birth centre can actually offer.

Important

Emergencies and clinical judgement come first. Your team may need to change the plan for your safety or your baby’s — that is not a failure of planning.
